Why Being A Good Business Analyst Isn't Just About deliverables
If you ask most Business Analysts what makes someone “good” at the role, the answers are usually the same:
- Clear requirements
- Well-defined processes
- Strong documentation
And yes; those things matter.
But they’re not what people remember.
The Reality Of Being a BA
Being a Business Analyst is hard.
You’re often working in environments where:
- Expectations are high
- Timelines are tight
- Stakeholder don’t always agree
- And change isn’t always welcome
You’re expected to bring structure to ambiguity.
To translate between teams.
To keep things moving when others are stuck.
But Here's What Most People Miss
In all of that pressure, it’s easy to focus purely on deliverables.
To make sure the documentation is perfect.
To ensure the process flows make sense.
To get everything signed off.
But stakeholders don’t walk away thinking:
“That was excellent documentation.”
They remember:
- How clear things felt
- How confident they felt
- How easy (or difficult) it was to work with you
They remember how you made them feel during the change.
Why Rapport Matters More Than You Think
Even the best documentation won’t carry you on its own.
If stakeholders don’t trust you, don’t feel heard, or don’t feel comfortable engaging, progress slows down.
- Meetings become harder.
- Decisions take longer.
- Resistance builds.
On the other hand, when you build rapport:
- Stakeholders are more open
- Conversations flow more easily
- Challenges surface earlier
- Alignment happens faster
And sometimes, something as simple as:
- Reading the room
- Adjusting your tone
- Or bringing a bit of ease into a tense conversation
…can completely change the outcome.
High Stakes Don't Mean No Personality
There’s a misconception that when the stakes are high, everything has to be serious.
But in reality, that’s when your ability to connect matters most.
You don’t need to be overly formal to be effective.
In fact, the BAs who stand out are the ones who can:
- Balance professionalism with personality
- Create space for honest conversation
- And make people feel comfortable, even in complex situations
The BA's That Get Remembered
The strongest Business Analysts aren’t just known for what they produce.
They’re known for:
- How they handle stakeholders
- How they navigate difficult conversations
- How they bring people with them through change
Because that’s what makes the work stick.
Final Thought
Yes, deliverables matter.
But if you want to be truly effective as a BA, focus just as much on the human side of the role.
Because in the end…
- People won’t remember every requirement you wrote
- But they will remember how you made them feEl
Time to practice
If you want to get better at handling real BA situations, not just the theory, but how you think, respond and engage with stakeholders. I run a scenario-based coaching cohort.
